Mr. Corn shines and heats
For several days now, drivers on Nysa’s bypass can admire the New Year’s illumination of Bioagra. In the building from which Mr. Corn is waving to us, the so-called cogeneration is in operation. This is a very efficient and ecological way of generating electricity and heat.
Last year, a ten storey-tall Mr. Corn ran around the grain elevator tower. This year, it appeared on a cogeneration building, in which electricity and useful heat are generated for the needs of the plant.
Cogeneration is an extremely economical and ecological way of generating energy. In a classic solution, electricity and heat are generated separately at the power plant and heating plant. Cogeneration involves producing both of these types of energy in the same process. This allows you to achieve 30% higher efficiency. This translates into significant economic and environmental benefits.
The “Goświnowice” Ethanol Plant is in many respects one of the most ecological and modern industrial complexes in Poland. In the case of cogeneration, Bioagra paves the way in a direction that the European Commission strongly promotes. In the first half of 2019, it approved public aid in the amount of 5 billion euros. It will be intended to develop electricity production in cogeneration.

Another element of the odor reduction system is operating
Bioagra launched the so-called catalytic oxidation at the “Goświnowice” Ethanol Plant – it is another element of the fermentation odor reduction system. The company also carried out research showing that the first device included in this system works very effectively.
Recently, Bioagra SA has invested as much as PLN 19 620 000 in reducing odor and excessive sound. In the middle of the year, the company set up an ethanol absorber. This is the first part of the odor reduction system created during the fermentation process, designed by American and Polish specialists.
Recently, the company launched the second part of the system, the so-called catalytic oxidation, which is based on high power electric heaters. Both devices are already permanently included in the technological process. They were immediately adjusted to the target volume of ethanol production, which the plant will achieve next year, after the ongoing investment process.
After starting the absorber, the first element of the system, the company carried out laboratory tests that showed that the 20-fold device reduced the amount of ethanol escaping from the fermentation vats. He was responsible for transferring the characteristic smell felt around the plant depending on weather conditions.
Catalytic oxidation – a device that reduces the smell of:
In August this year an additional olfactometric study of the fragrance environment was conducted, with the participation of the so-called nose-man (people with an extremely sensitive sense of smell). They showed that starting the absorber reduced the perception of the fermentation smell to several hundred meters around the company.
– The first of a series of planned devices has already significantly reduced the odor from the fermentation process, which has been confirmed by various studies – says Mirosław Obarski, the company’s spokesman. – We have recently launched another element of the system, the catalytic oxidation. We hope for further reduction of the smell. We are now working on the best possible integration of new devices with the ethanol production plant.
The company is also planning further olfactometric tests of the fragrance environment. It was agreed with the local community that representatives of villages adjacent to the Ethanol Plant would participate in them. Bioagra SA wants to be sure that the devices, in which the company has invested huge resources, work with the highest efficiency.
Bioagra SA has been running a program to reduce its impact on the environment since 2018. The company has implemented such measures despite the fact that it produces ethanol in accordance with the standards in force in both Poland and the European Union. The company’s management has guaranteed the local community that it will commission the development and implementation of solutions that will permanently reduce the intensity of smell and sound generated in the production of ethanol.
Conceptual work is underway on the third element of the odor reduction system, which at the same time will replace approximately 80% of carbon dioxide generated in the fermentation process with new products. The implementation is initially planned for 2021. Bioagra SA will then become one of the greenest enterprises in Europe.

Latający HoFlying Dutchman and Bioagralender i Bioagra
Once again Bioagra SA supported the organization of the International Polish Championships in Sailing Class FD (Flying Dutchman). Sailing is one of the most ecological and at the same time photogenic sports. Both amateurs and professionals can compete in In the FD class.
Five races were held on Lake Nyskie. Sailors sailed on the Nyskie Lake on the so-called “Triangle” and “herring” routes. The current German champions Markus and Joshua von LEPEL (Berliner Yacht Club) turned out to be the best. Polish crew Paweł and Maciej Żebrowscy (AKŻ 90 Wałcz) came second, while the Czechs, Ondrej Suchomel and Lukas PESEK (TJ SPARTAK Modrany) came third.
Over a dozen teams competed in the competition, but only two Polish and one Czech crew competed with the winners. Tomasz Kledzik, president of the Flying Dutchman Racing Association, reminds us that Germany is currently dominating this world sport discipline.
The winner, the German sailor Markus von LEPEL from the Berliner Yacht Club, said that it was one of the best events he was at. During the competition, it was possible to combine fierce competition on the water with a great, friendly atmosphere on land. This is supported by the infrastructure of Nysa sailing club. It allows all competitors to be in one place during and after the competition.
Tomasz Kledzik points out that swimming in the Flying Dutchman class is a big challenge for crew. A sailboat requires ballasting even in light winds. In addition, it is necessary to modify the sail settings during the competition, when the wind changes. The competition concentrates on who will be first at the start.
– It’s a bit like pole position in Formula 1 – explains Tomasz Kledzik. – You must start in such a way as not to be obscured by sails of competing boats, otherwise the yacht will lose speed.
This year the weather was a bit surprising. After almost the first day of the regatta, a fairly strong wind came the next day, which reached up to 5 degrees on the Beaufort scale. This required the crews to change the yacht sails settings during the competition and a lot of physical work on the water.
Nysa reservoir is extremely beautiful. The proximity of the mountains makes sailing on it both an unusual sport and aesthetic experience. Despite the demanding weather conditions (strong winds), the crew managed to avoid tipping, which happened quite last year. This is a good testimony to the preparation of sailors for this competition.
Flying Dutchman (Flying Dutchman) is an Olympic class of open-deck yacht with a crew of two. The name was taken from the legend of the Flying Dutchman. This is a very demanding sailing discipline – the large sail area results in yachts being strongly maneuverable and swimming very fast. Even a simple mistake can result in the yacht tipping over.

Mr. Corn at the Nysa Run
Mr. Corn once again opened the “Family Mile” and Nysa Run, which took place on June 8, 2019. The 7th edition of the event gathered a record number of nearly 900 competitors from Poland and abroad at the start.
Parents and their children appeared an hour before the main race at the start of the so-called “Family Mile” – a free event for everyone, with no age restrictions. The organizers also prepared additional attractions for Nysa families. This year, as before, Mr. Corn, a mascot of Bioagra SA, enjoyed great interest. Polish Olympic athletes from Moscow, Urszula Kielan and Janusz Trzepizur also ran in “Family Mile”.
The competitors covered a distance of 10 km in the Nysa Race. Kamil Karbowiak from Kotwica Brzeg won – he has ran this distance in 30 minutes and 20 seconds. It was a surprising change after the band of successes of players from Kenya. This year, the second and third place were taken by Hosea Tuel and Moses Kibire, and the fourth – another nice surprise – was taken by Paweł Matner from Matner Running Team Nysa. Like a year ago, a large group of professional runners, as well as entire groups practicing semi-professionally from Opole and other regions of the country stood on the starting line. Many participants are people who treat running as a form of active leisure. For them, beating the route was a test of speed and endurance in the struggle with professionals who impose a very fast pace from the very beginning.
